With assistance from home cinema distributor Pulse Cinemas, Kent-based Modus Vivendi recently installed a £50,000 home theatre into the top floor of a UK home.

The project was secured via a recommendation from joinery company Chamber Furniture – a business that Modus Vivendi often works with on projects.

“A client of theirs was renovating a substantial property in Kent and they were looking for someone to assist with developing a specification for the whole house AV system,” explains Luke Emmott, managing director at Modus Vivendi.

Following a site meeting and a follow up meeting at Modus’ showroom, the specification was developed with a budget of £50K (excluding VAT and seating) being allocated for the home cinema side of the project.

The house was to be completely renovated and refurbished, with a room on the top floor allocated for the cinema. The room size, shape and access were not ideal, so a basement conversion was loosely considered, but due to the costs involved this quickly reverted back to the top floor.

Modus took the clients to visit the Pulse Cinemas showroom, and it was following this that a specification for the cinema was put together.

Due to the clients’ passion for movies, the most obvious starting point was Pulse Cinemas, and once the client had experienced their demonstration facility they knew they were in the right place

“We gave Pulse free rein on what was most appropriate for the room and to maximise a system based on its restrictions.”

The home cinema was equipped with Triad In-Wall Silver LCR front speakers, In-Wall Bronze/4 SlimSub Enclosures and a pair of In-Wall Bronze/4 Surround Speakers. Powering the subs is a Triad RackAmp 350 DSP subwoofer amplifier, with the rest being taken care of by a Datasat RA7300 multi-channel power amplifier with processing courtesy of a Datasat LS10 processor using a third generation Apple TV as the source.

A Runco X-200i Single Chip DLP projector with a Rainier Anamorphic Lens was paired with a Screen Research FIS – 100″ 235:1 projector screen. The room boasts a Control4 HC-250 local room processor and HC-250 rack mount kit, Rako lighting dimming modules, control keypads and a twin replay motorized blind and curtain controller that controls an integrated motorised blackout blind. Eight Kensington standard leather Fortress Seating chairs were chosen as seating.

As the clients’ requirements were quite basic, requiring audio distribution, video distribution, local room control, whole house Wi-Fi and a cinema room, Control4 was selected to bring these services together as it offered best value for money and scalability should the client expand the system at a later date.

“Due to the size of the property, there are quite a few audio zones – in addition to the cinema room – so we installed an additional three 5.1 systems into the Wii room, snug and the family room,” says Luke.
